Self Portrait

Magpie Tales Prompt

The Revenant, Andrew Wyeth

Why can’t we paint ourselves

as gently as we paint others?

Their whites are soft and ethereal,

ours harsh, lighting cracks and scars.

Their faces complete and serene,

ours incomplete, shadow bruised.

Our brush strokes blanket them softly,

salving imperfections in oils.

Strokes saved for us stay hard

finding edges and sharpening them.

Self portraits are never becoming

to the faces who know the self.

Some secrets stay painted darkly

even in the brightest palette of light.

Oh. I was really blessed in reading this, Shanyn. So, so much wisdom here. You are so right: we’re so harsh, unforgiving with ourselves.

    Brilliant take.

nice…we are our own harshest critics….we will always find fault in ourselves…and often it is not true…really nice write…

Thanks Brian, for coming by, and you are right the faults we find deepest in ourselves are often the most untrue.

Wow, Shanyn. This is so, SO very beautiful!!! And sadly, so true. I am extremely critical of myself, of my outward reflection, too often forgetting that I am made in God’s image.

Tender blessings to you, dear one.

What an interesting concept you have brought up in this poem. You have certainly encouraged me to look at self-portraits from a different perspective.

I like this alot… tenderly bold. Courageous look at the self and how we envision our true selves vs. how we envision others.

nicely done poem, when we paint ourselves for others to see, we love to hide our imperfections those dark little secrets, its our vanity. and this poem beautifully express it. and in a sense it goes together with the painting.
