What’s your uniform?

Fire fighter, police officer, paramedic and priest.

Uniform, uniform, oh how I love a uniform!

Safety, comfort, protection and life.

Artists, square dancers, jui jitsui practitioners.

Smock, swirl and gi – oh a uniform!

Color, music and power.

Farmer, mother, truck driver and gangsta.

Uniform, uniform, oh how I wonder

at our ability to label so well.

Uniform with clothing, badge and stance.

Salute, hide, protect and serve.

Hidden or easily seen.

Behind the scenes or on a front line,

uniform makes you into a  target

or covers us as a shield.

Lab coat, trench coat, pink fur coat.

Scientist, spy and rapper suit up.

Who doesn’t have one, yet?

I started out serious, and deleted, I started again for fun and deleted.  I tried to post one and the internet ate it. I hope you enjoy this take from Fireblossom’s Challenge at With Real Toads.

Oh, yes. It’s how we humans label each other. So well done. I especially like the line about how uniforms function as both target and shield. Looks like you really enjoyed this prompt! I did, too!

At first glance I thought this challenge would bring out the heavy hitters…fireman, military etc. But everyone had done such a great job getting creative. This one was very good and washed through a plethora of uniforms at once…it appears that just about anything we do or want to be is a uniform in itself. Great writing.

Thank you so much…I was tempted to go to my fire background and pull out the stripes but this seemed to flow more…glad you stopped by and very glad you enjoyed the poetry.

I think there is a certain comfort in a uniform, a familiarity and a role to play.

Kerry I agree…and yet that comfort can also be a trap. Both sides to such a simple seeming thing, a uniform. thanks for coming by.

I enjoyed this a lot! The way you used the threes at the start of each stanza was cool.

Nurses, doctors, chefs and beauticians, are few not mentioned. I love this poet though as a uniform man, 🙂

Tony – thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. There are so many uniforms aren’t there? Glad you enjoyed the poem.
