(blank) control

Gun Control! Headlines will shout.

No violent games! Seeking an out.

Families with no babies to hug tonight.

Fists clench. Fight! Fight! Fight!

Gun, stick, rock, bomb. Bang. Gone.

Hatred needs only willing hands. One.

Questions with no answers. Ever.

Again, we ask. Answer – Never! never

Brother against brother, hand or stone.

Violence only seeks slaves. To own.

Promises from pulpits cry. Empty. Why.

We can’t beat hatred with more hate. Sigh.

Hold your babies now. Closer. Tight.

Remembering love, grace. Light.

Withdraw from the horror. Turn away.

Stop feeding the news machine. Pray.

The words are all jumbled up and this is what came out when I was thinking about today. How we can’t hate the hate out of someone. We can have gun control but what about hate control? Self control?

felt…its hard to really process today…something is wrong you know…it happens more and more often…but i think it def comes down to more a heart issue…you will find a weapon, doesnt have to be a gun…they just take out more at one time…ugh…hugging mine…

I hear ya my friend. Then I heard about a knife attack at a school in China. People will hurt with what they have at hand, the key is stopping them before hurting everyone else so badly. Thanks for coming by Brian. Appreciate it. Hugs.

You and I agree… hate and anger, retribution simply fuel the fire. Love. Compassion. Supporting one another. Greater community connections. These are the actions that will heal hearts, minds, bodies, souls.

Mental illness needs to enter the conversation as well, and the insufficient supports for families dealing with it. Yes, pray. Good one, Shanyn.

What a powerful reminder: Families with no babies to hug tonight”

“Hatred needs only willing hands. One.” So true.

“Violence only seeks slaves. To own.” Yes.

Your rhyme is very effective in this piece.

You covered so well all of the painful and confusing facets of this awful situation we’re in. Very well written..love the hope in the last stanza…beautiful offering.

Turn away and consolidate what you have learned in your own heart. I agree with this, Shanyn. Since the first broadcasts I have not watched or read any other news report on the Newtown incident. I refuse to become a bystander of other people’s sorrow nor feed the media frenzy which seems to take a perverse delight in scavenging around the wreckage.

I agree with you and Kerry about the media….this was as well put as any I’ve seen. We cant get long term solutions from knee jerk reactions. Great job.

Have you ever tried writing poetry with children? So far this summer the Sunflower Club has inspired us with measurement , science , art , numbers and biology and today we’re tried out some poems about sunflowers.
