It is not about horses

Saddle your own broncs

When you can saddle and ride my broncs

you can tell me how to do it.

Until then ride yer own horses.

It’s not about horses.

It’s not about riding.

It’s not about broncs.

Life has piles of crap here. And piles there.

And you’ll get some on your boots.

Sometimes on your jeans.

Under your nails.

In your nose.

But it’s not about the boots.

But it’snot about the crap.

We forget, in our super connected world,

that some things don’t belong to us.

We forget, in our need to connect,

that some things should be left alone.

It isn’t your business to be in my business.

I’ll mind my business if you mind your own.

Hank Jr. sang it well. He’s not alone.

Mind your own business. We can’t.

It isn’t easy to avoid the gossip

It is hard to encourage, support.

To be there when it’s ugly and hard.

But it is about love. And being there.

It is always about that. Being there.

Slogans, Sayings. Memes. Tweets.

Status updates come pouring in.

We watch news tickers because

it takes too long to hear the whole

story. Who wants to anyway?

It is about the whole story.

It is about the people, the heart.

So unless you are digging in.

Unless you are moping up.

Unless you are dragging hoses

to put out fires or making soup

to feed the masses. Unless you

are willing to do what is needed

you can hush and get outta the

way of those who are willing to do it.

Saddle your own horses. Ride em too.

Corral your broncs. Brand your cows.

Help your neighbor when you can.

Fill some plates and top up the hope.

It’s not about horses, or cows.

But it is about hearts and souls.

It is about doing what we can

when it is needed most.

I’m tending bar at dVerse tonight and we are talking about sayings, phrases, tweets and signs that can inspire our poetry. Stop by won’t you?  And I am so pleased you stopped by.  Thanks!  Thanks to Pastor Kevin Weatherby of SaveTheCowboy for his great western wisdom.

ha true…maybe we have a problem realized when we should and should not be connected…as a society i think we are far too disconnected generally…but let something go wrong and we are def ready to get into someones business…

love that crap quote and the boots…lol

You are so right Brian! Disconnected from what we should be connected to, and connected to stuff that we should leave alone.

Glad you enjoyed it. Kevin will be thrilled you loved the crap and boots quote! 🙂

Aww, this made me cry (not a shock to you I’m sure), especially that it’s about the love and the whole story. We live in a drive-by, drive-through, memo world and too often our empathy gets left in the dust. Thanks so much for your kind words in my little corner of the internet today, they mean a great deal to me. It’s wonderful to find a kindred spirit, surprising or not :).

You are most welcome Anna! It is rare to find one of our own kind, so I’m pretty happy about that! Thanks for coming over, and yah I totally get the tears.

The drive-by and drive-through world is such a keen observation. We need more empathy, more care.

      Great to see you!

I thought this really well written and had a rhythm all its own that picked up momentum as you neared the end. On top of that you made a social statement without preaching. Really Good.>KB

Made me think philosophy while swamping a stall, made my chaps & saddle creak with joy, made me hate barbed wire, dehorning, and killing horses for the meat, made me inches taller in my high heeled boots, made me smile while weeping as I agree that what the world needs now is love, sweet love–the one common denominator on this plane of existence–odd that the poets know it, and proselytize it in poetics; I can hear you roar, and feel your pain, & cowboy shirts button easiest.

Hats off to you partner, you roped and dallied that one just perfect! Glad you enjoyed the poem!

So much to consider in this…I would love to meet that Pastor. I’m a child of the west, so of course this resonated for me. I would love to saddle up again, but because of my kidney transplant I can’t. But just to be around those magnificent animals awes me. Thanks for the great prompt.

You can find Kevin online or on FB. Watch the sermons online, they are awesome! 🙂

If you can’t ride, being next to them is a close second! Thanks for joining in. And for stopping by.

A wonderful wiseacre tone here. I especially like the asides–the it’s not about the boots, etc– so mordant and funny. K.

Some wonderful philosophy here, Shanyn. Ya, so true that so often we have to remind ourselves to mind our own business, as we have enough business of our own to mind without bothering with someone else’s. Yes, and so much IS about being there…and about love…being there is SO important in this fast paced world when so many don’t give each other the time of day. And yes, about hearts and souls & just old fashioned caring! I enjoyed your prompt, once I figured out what to do with it. LOL.

What a perfectly wonderful poem -so much common sense wisdom is lost on so many now a days – if people would just think about others – it would be a nicer world- love this! K

ah true that… in our super connected world we’re confronted with so much things and it can surely be overwhelming.. also the piles of crap we may step into… it’s good to make sure that we clean those boots properly… we have a saying in germany about unhealthy thoughts … you cannot prevent the birds flying above your head but you can prevent that they’re building nests in your head…

  14. September 15, 2013 at 9:35 am

I truly think your have touched on things that’s wrong today… The flow of things, the muck of shit with glittering gems buried… how should we survive… take of the boots and walk barefoot maybe… Thanks for a wonderful prompt that for me was the most difficult yet… your showed me the gems in the flood

My comment is going to be peculiar (but true). I found this poem quite endearing – I suspect because it is all true. Clever? Yes. Well done? Yes. But true … so very, very true and that is why I like it. Hey nice to see you Shanyns.

I love the quote and wish some people I know would heed it. What I hate so much is negativity. Can’t people just sometimes find something to be happy about? Sorry – where’d that come from…
Your poem is right on. So good. Wish the world could read it.

I know where it came from, the same place my rants and wishes about the same topic come from – knowing we can do better! 🙂 Thanks for coming by. Appreciate it!

So much truth here. Does appear to me that the more we are e-connected the more disconnected we are in actual physical contact.

I love this poem! When you mentioned Hank Williams Jr. singing “Mind your Own Business,” I was actually listening to his father singing it, one of my dad’s favorites and so true, don’t know how many times I have wanted to say that to someone. Remarkable piece, will be back to read more of your work.

That is so cool you were listening to Hank Sr, sing! Thanks for coming by, and I’m so looking forward to seeing you again.
