Peace begins

Peace begins with a smile – Mother Teresa

Peace begins with a small thing.

Something so tiny we don’t even see.

Begins like flight, with a wing.

Taking us from this place we are to then.

Peace rings with a small sound.

That only the heart and soul can hear.

Sings building up, around. Around.

Like blood pumping through bodies.

Peace dances barefooted then.

On broken streets and meadows.

In war torn town and wild glen.

Like laughter across the mourning.

Peace holds us so close, lightly.

Urging us to act in love, now. Here.

It never starts high, nor mighty.

Peace comes from the ground up.

Born in soil, growing wild.

Peace cannot be cultivated.

Alive! Breathing.  A child.

Peace comes from those too.

Peace is a soft voice.

A smiling face, an open hand.

It comes, a choice.

Dancing on broken dreams.

Two wonderful prompts for dVerse Poets – a ballad  for Form For All (which I have attempted after only one cup of coffee) and a poem for Peace Day.  These I combined into Peace Begins. Enjoy. And be sure to stop by and see what the other amazing poets wrote!

nice…i love peace dancing in barefeet, esp in the places we would not expect like broken streets….i love it when peace breaks out in those places and becomes a reality for people…and it does start with small gestures…

Beautiful, Shanyn. I like how you have described the softness and the ‘smallness’ of the beginnings of peace. I do think you are right. Peace does not emerge fully grown. It starts small & grows If we let it….

peace is a choice – and each of us chooses pro or contra daily.. i like that quote as well… a smile can be such a bridge and certainly a bridge into peace as well

Thank you Claudia! It is a choice, a daily sometimes hourly or moment by moment choice isn’t it?

I think peace comes from below… like a child, dancing barefoor… oh this is plain truth… and still so difficult.

The plain truth usually is the most difficult, isn’t it? Thanks for coming by Bjorn.

Wonderful how you find peace in little things and unecpected places. What an uplifting poem you wrote, and only with one cup. Wow.

Yes, one cup! Imagine what more would have done! 🙂 Glad you enjoyed the poem.

it is always a choice, and too bad we are so habituated to the wrong choices

Truly Ray, truly. We need to make better ones – not easy ones, or even popular ones. Thanks for coming by.

Peace will only come from the individual first. You are right!

I always like to think of peace as a grace roots effort even as Walt Whitman said…a leaf of grass or grace as it were…

i always enjoy your poetry…and thank again for a visit to my page…and sorry again it took me so long to get back here to comment…smiles..

I like that, a grace roots effort, very nicely stated. Thank you for coming by. Glad you enjoy the poetry.
